Cigarette Tables

Karl Springer style cigarette table
in the living room of the Visual Vamp
from Neophobia

I never was a cigarette smoker, nor did I find it particularly glamorous as portrayed in the vintage movies I have always loved. My parents smoked and they had an array of Mad Men style decor accessories associated with smoking: fancy ashtrays and table top lighters, cigarette boxes and cups, and small tables sprinkled around the room called cigarette tables.

Things come full circle, and I was just gifted a lovely Karl Springer style cigarette table for my birthday. I saw it front of the shop Neophobia, attracted to the Lucite, and the clever design of the table. I have a thing for small drop-tables, called so because you can drop a drink or a book on them. Anyway, I told my friend Caroline about the table, saying it was in rough shape, that the price was good because of the condition, and most important, that I did not need another little table.

This lady also had an obsession for small tables

But the darling cigarette table appeared on my birthday, and I loved it right away. I cleaned it up, polished the Lucite, and gold leafed the brass, mainly because the bottom portion had been corroded and damaged.

I did a little research about this style of table, and the name of Karl Springer popped up.

There has been a huge resurgence in his popularity, and you can find many Karl Springer pieces, and in-the style-of pieces everywhere.

The Duchess of Windsor loved and embraced Karl Springer's designs, and propelled him into further success in the 1960's and 1970's.

I spy a little Springer style table
in the home of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor

Whilst hopping around the internet looking for Springer tables in the rooms of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, I found a curious little site that sells DOW merchandise. I was charmed by the linens.

Do you love and use drop tables too?

Cheerio y'all!

I love the table, of course, but love the name "cigarette table" more. They are actually perfectly sized for our tiny New Orleans nooks and crannies, too.

Adorable table. Looks fantastic redone. I love small tables, didn't know they were called drop tables, makes sense.

I'm with Gimlet; living in an older small-roomed New Orleans home, I'm a fan of any piece of furniture that can be moved around to accomodate the crowd and their needs.

I have a few of such around my house, good for everything near a chair or sofa!
And I love your emerging kitchen! Bravo to all!

I love little tables to perch a book, a drink or lovely linen napkin. In the addition, I would love a little lucite table to drop nearby with a drink and a good read.
I always love you for your inspiration and your virtues-
I am thrilled you never smoked. Atta girl.

That stacked table is just yummy. The tables actually work well when paired with the low armed bergeres. Adds in some nice contrast.

Ok, now I need to search to see if you have revealed your greige paint formula. Love it.

Love these little tables! And I have one I am quite fond of. And oddly enough, I really like vintage ashtrays, even though I don't smoke. I think they make pretty little pieces of art or containers for little things that need a home!
