Two Houses Made Into One Fabulous Home

A few months ago I posted a reader's home (Kellie and Marc). It is a wonderfully designed space that we all enjoyed seeing. As I have gotten to know Kellie better, I have found out that she comes from a family of designing women.

The home of Kellie and Marc HERE

There are four daughters (Kellie, Maggie, Sara, Jenni), each one a decor maven with one house cuter than the other, and each one looks very different in decor personality. But all share put together looks that anyone of us would love.

Knowing that my own design awareness came from my mother, I asked Kellie about her mom. And sure enough the mother of this family of designing women is the inspiration for all of the daughters.

You know I had to see Mom's house. Her name is Jill, and she has made a career out of making the family home unique and beautiful. All the daughters are grown with homes of their own, so Jill has recently made an empty nest for her and hubby Peter that all the daughters and sons-in-law and the five grandchildren love to fill.

Two single shotgun houses made into one home

Jill's house is unique from the get-go. She took two old falling down single shotgun houses that were on lots so narrow that you could almost touch the house next door. I love the way she used color and repetitive elements to visually join two houses together as one.

The center "bridge" addition connecting the two old houses is genius. It is meant to be the front door, but the family secret is that they all use the door on the house on the left side. The brick courtyard was made from bricks that came from fireplaces that had to be knocked out. Jill is an amazing re-cycler, and up-cycler extraordinaire.

The "bridge" addition between the two houses

So let's go in! The first room you come into is in house #1, and it is a precious little sitting room. Jill combines vintage and antique pieces to great effect, a classic shabby chic cottage style that is familiar and beloved.

Pale wall colors and dark wood floors work beautifully, and for the most part Jill keeps the palette soft.

The sitting room

The sitting room segues shotgun house style into the master bedroom and bath. This creates a master suite effect in one whole house.

LOVE the deep ruffle linen bedspread in the master bedroom

A vintage dresser and mirror in the master bedroom - perfect!

Walking through a door from the sitting room, you enter the "bridge". This is where the living room and dining area are. It is an ingenious use of space. There are French doors at both ends of the "bridge" that let in plenty of light.

There is a collection of vintage mirrors hung over the couch, which adds a reflective element that makes the narrow space expand visually. Jill has many charming groupings of collections placed around the house.

I love the chenille bedspread on the chaise with the jewel holding it in place

Walking across "the bridge" you enter house #2, which has two guest rooms and a bath, and the kitchen.

Each guest bedroom is furnished with sweet textiles and mementos. There is a framed shadow box with a purse in it! It belonged to Jill's mother, the girls' grandmother. They said grandmother carried that purse everyday of her life that they remember. The photo over the bed is of the grandmother.

The slip cover scallop shape headboard is so pretty

Love the pink and green!

At the back end of the "bridge" there is an opening to the kitchen (house #2). Jill opted for a clean classic country look. White marble counter tops and painted white cabinets are a look we all love. Jill did this seven years ago. She painted one accent wall in blackboard paint so the grand kids can scribble.

The pink mixer has never been used, so it's home for a pretty plant!

Let's go out the back door to the garden! Here you can see alot of clever recycling.

LOVE the lady head planter...

So what do you think? Have you ever seen anything more clever or more cute? It's like two dollhouses to play in!

I have been promised a house tour of the three other daughters, and I can hardly wait. I can see why all the girls love decorating and are so good at it.

Growing up with Jill, who is the resourceful and artistic visionary of the family, has created a decorating dynasty! And Peter and Marc and all the other husbands love what their designing women come up with, and lend helping hands and willing hearts.

Enquiring Minds Want To Know

It's so quiet after all the fuss last week. The paparazzi have stopped camping outside our driveway gates, and the house feels so empty. Some of you have asked how it all went, if we are resting, and would we do it again.

Happy Visual Vamp on the PRC 2011 Shotgun House Tour

It really was the best time. Everyone said they liked our house the best, but of course they had to say that since they also said we were the only owners who stayed to talk to them. We are tired, and no rest yet with many other projects in the works. And yes we would do it again! We really want people to move into the old houses in New Orleans, to fix them up, and enjoy the fabulous city lifestyle.

Alberto and I thank everyone who came to see our little piece of swamp, and we thank the Preservation Resource Center for hosting this fabulous event, and for their continuing efforts to rebuild New Orleans using the grand old existing housing stock that is uniquely New Orleans.

Hundreds of people walked through our shotgun house

Happy Weekend House Tour

Visual Vamp Valorie Hart and Alberto Paz
Preservation Resource Shotgun House Tour

It's the day before the house tour and I am working like ten field hands, and Alberto is working like at least five. Just taking a break between washing windows, and plowing the back forty to share a video link (that Alberto made) with you of how the house looked when we first viewed it with the real estate agents. Talk about staging for a sale!

We are going to run it on loop on the TV in the living room tomorrow during the tour. I hate how a TV not turned on looks like a black hole, so this video will be "art" and be informative ha ha. I hope you enjoy it, and happy weekend! And if you are in New Orleans stop by for the tour. I have some surprise guests as my docents.

Go HERE to see the video!

Yard Project Almost Done

Gravel and Trina Turk and a place to party

I have been working on my yard since Katrina trashed it. It has been slow going to say the least.
I have the best neighbors in the world, and they have been working hard to rebuild the fence that blew down between our houses, and it was finally finished a few months ago, which was what I needed to proceed.

I'm giving you some hints of the elements I am using in these photos from my clipping file.

Pink and Buddhas

Our house is on a double lot, a real treat for city living. We have two old cracked concrete patios in the back, because at one time this double shotgun house had two families living in it, hence two patios. I took down the fence between the two to open it up into one larger space.

A lawn to mow

No budget to completely demo old cement patios, and really no will to do it either. So I came up with some stylist choices, that have worked out very well.
There is a nice area for entertaining in the back now.

I spy a Bocce court!

On the side of the house with the extra lot, there is a driveway for off street parking. I have carved out some planting beds flanking the drive, preserving a 150 year Sweet Olive tree, and adding new pass-along plants, including some great palm trees.

There was also space for a lawn! Green grass in the city! At first I thought about hard scape for this area, or even raised planter boxes inspired by Brooke and Steve's (Velvet and Linen)
front yard vegetable garden. But in the end I was most inspired by Cholo, who loves to play ball, and the grass was the best option for his sweet little paws.

Are you up for a game?

We planted St. Augustine grass, and it is still coming into to it's own, but I can see how lush it's going to be, and I envision some croquet perhaps? I've been eye balling a vintage croquet set in a local antique shop on Magazine Street.

And how about some lawn bowling and cocktails?

Oooh Lawn Bowling outfits!

Or maybe a game of Bocce!

Love the ghetto-look Bocce court with the discarded beer can

The weather is so fine right now. The shop was closed Saturday because a huge raucous St. Patrick's Day parade rolls on Magazine Street, 1400 drinking men dressed in tuxedos handing out roses for sloppy kisses.

So Jack came over and we did alot of work, painting and spiffing up. Alberto is building a few things, and helping me realize the vision I have had in my head for five years and counting.
How was the weekend where you're at? Are you doing tons of yard work too?

Another hint - the secret garden
Something I love from the French Quarter

I'm on the fast track to complete as much as possible. The PRC Shotgun House Tour is April 2, so if you are in New Orleans get your ticket HERE, and come and see our house AND yard!

Warm and Cozy With Brown Velvet

This is the front door to our house
The Union Jack armoire is our coat closet
This room is our dance studio

I had another old ratty vintage chair reupholstered. I bought it for $20. eleven years ago, and it was in such good shape, it stayed the way I found it, gold velvet with brown wood arms and legs.
The chair has good classic lines, so I decided I would re-up it.

Leonels has done all the upholstery in our home, and we use them at perch. the high end home furnishings shop I work in. They are simply the best for workmanship, and they are fair with pricing.

View from the living room into the dance studio

I meant the chair for the dance studio, placed by a window, a nice spot to just sit and gaze, or an handy place to change into dance shoes, or sit and teach from the chair ha ha.

Uh, no. Too "Mr. and Mrs."
So I broke up the romance, & moved Mrs. Brown Velvet Chair

But I got seduced by the "newness" and moved the chair into the living room. It didn't quite fit, and paired with the lime green wing chair, it looked a little too much like "Mr. and Mrs. Chair", too granny even for this granny.

Mrs. Brown Velvet does a tango in the dance studio

So Back to the dance studio it went.

I painted the arms and legs of the chair white, and distressed the paint a bit. The new fabric is brown velvet, purchased from Fabric.com. The old chair had nail heads, but for the new version I chose self-piping. I have nail heads on the couch and French settee, and my breakfast room chairs, and just thought, "enough with the nail heads already."

A place to gaze or change into dance shoes

Then I moved it back to the living room, and moved it this way and that way. Fuss and fidget, fuss and fidget. Oh the silly restless illness of a decor addict. Don't judge/laugh. I know you do the same thing.

I moved the chair this way...

Then I moved the chair that way...

And then I finally moved it back to the studio where I wanted it to be in the first damn place! So now the chairs are all at rest for the moment, cozy on this winter day.

Striped doors in the dance studio adjoin the living room

Cozy
- Do you see Cholo?

I have some exciting news. The Preservation Resource Center invited Alberto and I to be on the first Shotgun House Tour since Hurricane Katrina. We are so honored and excited. It's Saturday April 2 in case you are in New Orleans.

I needed to snap some photos, and I got a new camera from Alberto for Christmas, so I am experimenting with settings and exposures. I always shoot with natural light which is tricky, since even though our house doesn't feel gloomy, it's not exactly flooded with light.

So these photos are part of the learning curve, and since I had them I thought I'd share them, in hopes to give you something to look at during the MONSTER STORM OF THE CENTURY!

PS Thank you all for the great response to my project with the apricot silk drapes. Next week I will show you another room....
